Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 4.5HP Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine, briggs and stratton, piston rod

Question
John, I have a 22" side discharge Yard Machines Mower made by MTD. I think the piston rod broke. What are my options?
The Briggs and Stratton engine is Model 10H902,Type 0285 E1, Code 05120531. Is it worth rebuilding as a DIY project or could I just replace the engine. The cutting blade is attached to a shaft that is 2 3/4"long and is 7/8" wide. I am concerned I wont be able to find an exact duplicate. Thanks for your help and look forward to your response!!
The mower looks brand new.

Answer
Hello Paul:

The Connecting Rod is $20.00us. The Oil Pan/Sump Gasket is $2.00 to $3.00. If the Connecting Rod Broke by Seizing to the Crankshaft, then Trash the Engine. If No Internal Damage is Seen, then the DIY is Really up to you. You will Require a Brake Cylinder Hone to De-glaze the Cylinder. You can Use a Screw Style Hose Clamp for a Ring Compressor. Check the Cylinder at the TDC Area for a Lip. If you can Catch a Fingernail on this Lip, then Use the Hone and Hold it in this Area Long Enough to Cut the Ridge Down, then De-glaze the Remainder of the Cylinder. You want to Remove the Slick Surface from the Cylinder. Use Plenty of Oil. Do Not Let the Stone of the Hone Get Dry. As For a Replacement, I suggest you Get a Short Block. If the External Components of you Engine are Good, then this is the Route if you Do Not do the DIY. You can Contact Outdoor Distributors @ 1-877-707-2787 and they can Assist with a Replacement Engine or Short Block. Have your Model, Type and Code Numbers if you Call them. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
