Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 25 hp kohler on 03 craftsman, head gasket problems, hp kohler

Question
I have done a lot of research and all ready know about the head gasket problems with this engine. I an sure I can do the repair my self and have the kohler service manual. My question is will replaceing the head gasket fix the problem? Will this happen again? Should both sides be done? Should I use new head bolts or change to studs and nuts?( I have bolts ). Also is there a part# for a kit or do thr parts need to be purchased seperatly? Any help would be great.

Answer
Go with the nuts and studs.
If you order the head gaskets for this engine you will get a head gasket and the studs.

While you have the heads off pull the reed valves off of the breathers inside each cylinder.  Take a 3/8 drill bit and counter sink the holes the screws go into a little bit.  The original bolts were self taping and when they were screwed into the head they pulled a small amount of aluminum out as they were tightened.  They pulled out aluminum wich prevented the reed from sealing properly.
