Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Lawn Mower w/6HP B&S Intek engine, carburetor body, craftsman lawn mower

Question
This self-propelled mower (Model 917.377140) is about 8 years old, and is
acting its age.  Lately, it's been surging when running, then the other day
stopped and wouldn't start.  I drained the gas (small amount of water-maybe
1/8th teaspoon).  I also changed the spark plug and took off the carb bowl,
which had some caramelized goo in the bottom.  Cleaned that and other
parts with spray carb cleaner (took water to dissolve the goo), but didn't go
much further than that.  In the process, I  destroyed the gasket between the
carb and the air filter base, so I made one from thin cardboard.
Now it starts very easy after priming the bulb three times, runs strong for
about 3-4 seconds and quits.  Help! I've wasted two days on this, and can't
afford to take it to a repairman.

Answer
Hello Jon:

Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. Go to your Local Automotive Parts Supplier and Purchase a Package of Gasket Material (thin). Make the Gasket Out of this. Other than a New Primer Bulb, you Should Not Require Any Other Parts, Just a Good Cleaning. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
