Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Deciding on a frist riding mower, sears craftsman, side discharge

Question
Hi Paul -

I am considering buying my first riding mower.  I am on a limited budget of about 200.00 and in that range, I have a choice of two different machines.  The first is a Sears Craftsman II Ride N Mulch 10hp 30 inch cut model 502.255050 with a dual rear bagger setup.  The second is a Noma model A3612000 12hp 36 inch cut, side discharge with no accessories.  Both run and drive well, both have new batteries.  The Noma is a front engine model, two brand new blades, tires are a bit worn, engine cover looks as if it has been painted.  The Craftsman is a rear engine model, tires look new, has the dual rear bagger setup, can be converted to a mulcher, was a classic little old man owned machine.  I have my choice or either machine for 200.00.  Which, do you think would be the better choice?  The only differences that I found were that the front engined Noma steers harder and the rear engined Craftsman has more legroom.  I also noticed that the Craftsman has a molded weight chamber at the front of the mower, almost like where a bumper would be and it is filled with stone.  I assume this is a counterweight.  It has been suggested with all the weight in the rear of the Craftsman, then adding the weight of the rider and the grass, the rear engined model could tear up the grass.  True?

I appreciate all your input. I am new to the world of riding mowers and want to purchase the right one.

Thanks.

Answer
Hey Jeff. 200.00 doesn't buy much.

The "concrete" filled weight is to counter balance the bagger so you don't do wheelies.  Neither will hurt your lawn.

Check the oil.  Which ever looks the cleanest is the one to buy.

Be forwarned,  Both machines were turds when new so don't expect much for 200.00.

Parts availability will be much better on the Craftsman,  Both machines were probably built by Noma.
