Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler PRO 26.hp Courage Twin cylinder, crankcase breather, steep grade

Question
Hey John its wade again..

Question, since this is my first kohler (Kohler PRO 26.hp Courage Twin cylinder) in a riding mower, I’m not sure if its normal for my new mower with about 1hr on it to smoke when I went down a steep grade twice.

As soon as I would make the turn to come back across the grade it stopped smoking. I’m pretty sure it was oil burnings.

It happened twice with a fair amount of smoke both times.

Now it could be possible it was filled a little too high on the stick from the factory with oil (I noticed it was up on the highest mark when I pulled the stick before I started it). I mean, it wasn’t where I would fill it up to (Halfway on the full imprint). It was all the way to the top of the full mark.

Just wondering what would cause it to burn out oil like that when the mowers leaning downhill.

Thank ahead of time,

Wade..

Answer
Hi Wade:

It Sounds like the Crankcase is Overfilled or the Crankcase Breather is Not Operating Properly. Bring the Oil Level Down to What you Think is Proper and Operate the Mower on the Slope Again. If the Engine Still Smokes, then the Crankcase Breather is Not Operating. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
