Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Intek 18.5 Charging, craftsman dlt 3000, steering wheel puller

Here is my problem:  I have a Craftsman DLT 3000 model number: 917247641 with a B&S Intek 18.5 Model#31P777-0348E1.  The problem started with the smell of burnt wiring coming from the engine.  At the same time the voltmeter started to read toward the (-)negative side.  I am pretty sure that the alternator and/or the voltage regulator has fried.  Any advice and procedure for changing these parts would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was Located in the Question Pool. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. The Breakdown shows Both a Stator with the Built in Regulator and a Stator with the External Regulator. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). Remove the Flywheel Nut or Starter Cup (Depends on the Model). Now Attach a Steering Wheel Puller to the Flywheel Using the Threaded Holes in the Flywheel. Tighten the Puller. Now Hit the Puller with a Hammer. Repeat this Procedure Until the Flywheel Pops Up or can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft. Now Replace the Stator and Reassemble. Hope this Helps.
