Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman LT2000, Kohler 17.5 engine, craftsman lt2000, allexperts

Question
Paul,

I have a lawnmower that I bought in 2004 (Craftsman LT2000).  I can start it and it runs for a few minutes when it is sitting on level ground, then it will sputter and stop.  Similar to running out of gas.  I have changed the fuel filter but it did not resolve my problem.  It seems like the carburetor is not getting enough gas to keep running.  I had this problem when I first bought the mower and it was under warranty.  Sears sent a technician out to fix it, but he could not fix the problem so they sent a new mower.  Now a few years later and no warranty I am having the same problem.  I suspect there is some kind of design flaw because I don't see this engine being used in later models.

Can this issue be fixed?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I also saw that the another person has a similar question on this website back in May,but didn't see a resolution to the problem.  http://en.allexperts.com/q/Small-Engines-Lawn-1746/Sears-LT2000-LAWN-TRACTOR.htm

Thank-you for the help.

Regards,

Lou

Answer
Do you have spark at the plug when the engine dies.  If so you have a carb issue.  Clean the carb, tank and replace the lines and filter. If no spark you need a coil.

The engine doesn't have a design problem.  This engine runs "pig rich"  The EPA killed this engine, not Sears.
