Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deer 17.5 kohler, hydraulic lifters, torque specs

Question
QUESTION: I have an L110 17.5 hp Kohler. I started it and the exhaust pipe into the muller was cherry red in about ten seconds (at the slip joint) I'm thinking a collapsed lifter since they are hyd. and no adjustment for clearance am I on the right track?

ANSWER: Hello Steve:

Check the Flywheel Key First. Check the Muffler and Ensure it Is Not Clogged. If these are Good, then Since this Has the Hydraulic Lifters, it will Most Likely be a Collapsed Lifter. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. Thanks ....................Steve

Answer
Hello Again Steve:

I am Glad you Located the Cause of the Problem. The Torque I Use is as Follows: Rocker Arms;  5/16 x 18 = 20ft pds. 3/8 x 16 = 40ft pds. Valve Cover Bolts; 1/4 x 20 = 10ft pds. 5/16 x 18 =  20ft pds.
