Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): troy bilt tiller, troy bilt tiller, fuel tank cap

Question
I have a troy bilt tiller with a 8 hp. kohler(Horse) engine. It has been sitting up over 4 years. It turns over with pull rope but no fire. How do I service it just to get to point of trying to start it?

Answer
Jack
First I would empty the gas out and put new fresh gas in it and a Fuel filter. Then I would check to see if you have spark,if you do install a new plug. Check the air filter if it is dirty get a new one. If you have no spark then you may need a new ignition module.

Problem: Engine will not start or is hard to start.
Possible causes:

Fuel tank is empty or shutoff valve is closed, or fuel line or fuel tank cap vent is clogged.
There is water in the fuel.
Carburetor is overchoked.
Carburetor is improperly adjusted or needs service.
Ignition system or its wiring is defective or ignition switch is off.
Deadman or other cutoff switch is open or defective.
Spark plug is fouled, improperly gapped, or damaged.
Engine compression is poor
