Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda EG 5000 generator, output shaft, honda generator

Question
Paul,

I have a Honda generator that needs some engine work, yes, it's the one I asked you about a couple weeks ago, about reringing it. The customer wants it repaired as you suggested, that's what I am going to do. My question is how to separate the engine from the generator. I know you said there is a long bolt that goes through the stator and bolts to the output shaft. Is that all you have to do is remove the bolt? will anything fall apart inside the generator?

Answer
Wow Mark, usually the bore and crank turn scares them off and then you throw in a hundred dollar carb and they get the picture.

You have know idea what you are getting yourself into.   There are about 20 wires and connections and about 15 parts to remove before you even begin to split the generator from the engine.

If you insist on loosing money on this job, this is what I suggest.

Stand the generator frame on it's end. Engine side down.  Break out the digital camera for future reference.

Basically what you have to do is start from the outside and work your way down.  MARK EVERY WIRE!  What you have to do is remove the stator first,  thats the windings that don't move.  Juat start going piece by piece until you get there.  You will eventually have only a rotor attached to the crank.

Mark, I can't emphasize enough the loss of money you will have on this job.   This is rebuilding an automatic transmission hard.
