Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere JS60, mulching blade, yard sale

Question
I purchased a John Deere JS60 at a yard sale this weekend.  It didn’t have a blade on it so the guy at the yard sale said that I should not start it because of “balancing issues”  I spoke to the guys at the local JD dealership and they said I should be fine, just don’t rev the engine (I am wating for parts to install mulching blade).  So I tried to start it.  I got a little bit of smoke the first few pulls, then nothing.  I took the air filter out, changed the plug and tried it again.  Saw a little bit of smoke around where the air filter used to be, but no luck.  It also kept ripping the pull cord out of my hand when I got to the top of my pull.  I got a pretty nasty injury to one of my fingers as a result.  Any idea what it going on??  Should I wait until the blade is on until trying again??  Thanks, Jason.

Answer
Hello Jason:

Give Up. You are Not Going to Start this Engine Without a Blade Attached. The Blade is a Counter Balance and IS REQUIRED to RUN this Engine Even at Idle. That is Why All the Sharp Kick Back and Ripping the Starter Handle from Your Hand. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
