Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): snapper rider mower, air filter assembly, snapper rider

Question
QUESTION: My uncle recently gave me his eleven, twelve, year old snapper rider mower.  It is an 8hp (B&S), 25" hi-vac set-up.  I've had it for about a month now and have used the mower about 5 times.  I've had a hard time determining the oil level as the stick shortly after running indicates low oil.  I have poured some oil in on a couple of occasions, checked the stick and it reads the proper level.  Last week after using the mower for about 15 to 20 minutes smoke began to come up through the top of the motor (running very hot).

I have a couple of questions:
1. I intend to change the oil, but cannot find out how much oil this engine requires, is there a way of knowing?

2. My uncle suggested getting the mower serviced (tune-up maintenance); although, he stated that the mower ran fine and there was no need to rush.  I intend to get the mower serviced but am wondering if there are bigger issues with the smoke.  If it is going to be a major repair, I would rather consider a new mower.

ANSWER: Hello Henry:

It is Best to Check the Oil After the Engine has Set for At least 30 Minutes. Are you Sure the Crankcase Is Not Overfilled. Remove the Crankcase Breather/Vent and Ensure it is Venting the Crankcase Properly. If the Engine Was Overfilled with Oil; it May Have Gotten Into the Crankcase Breather and is Not Allowing the Crankcase to Vent. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Thanks for your assistance John, much appreciated.  I'm not a mechanic by trade, or hobby, and this is the first rider mower I have owned so please bear with me.  Can you tell me where to locate the crankcase breather?  Are you referring to the air filter assembly?  I will forward on the engine model to you when I get home this evening.

thanks,

Henry

Answer
Hello Again Henry:

No Worries. That is What I am Here For. No Question is Stupid or Dumb. The Crankcase Breather is Located Either Under the Flywheel or Behind the Carburetor. The Process us a Simple One to Explain if When I get the Model Numbers. That is Why I Requested the Model Numbers. I can Usually Locate a Breakdown/IPL for you to View Online and I can Use it for a Reference. I am Only Allowed to Answer 10 Questions a Day, so If you Can Not Get Through to Me Because I have Maxxed Out, then Submit your Question Around 9pm EST the Following Day. That is When My New Day Starts. Thanks.
