Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mculloch pro mac 10-10 starter spring, recoil starter, electrical conduit

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have been repairing small engines out of my basement for years and i just fixed an old 70s 10-10. The saw was running excellently until just today the starter pulled out. i needed to recoil the spring. However, i cant seem to get this long of  a starter spring wrapped around the pulley manually. Any tips on how to recoil starter spring?

ANSWER: Hello James:

I Wind the Spring Inside a Piece of Electrical Conduit that I Made Just for this Problem. I have Different Diameters for Different Recoil Housings. Then I Transfer the Spring Into the Recoil Housing by Setting the Conduit into the Housing and Using a Deep Well Socket, Hold the Spring in the Recoil Housing and Pull the Conduit Out of the Housing. New Springs have a Wire Holding it Coiled for Installation into the Recoil Housing. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: And also, I discovered a new way to wind the Mcculloch pull start (I'm not sure if it works on other brands)if you put a 1/4 drive in the hole on the assembly you can wind the spring onto the assembly (rope side) and then place the other side on. Hope this might help with some of your projects.

Thank you much
