Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman 6.5hp eager-1 mower has no spark..., eager 1 engine, craftsman bagger

Question
Hello,
I have a Craftsman bagger/mulcher self propelled mower, model 917-378420.  The mower is the 6.75 horse Eager-1 engine.  When I first tried to start the mower I had no sign of any attempt to fire.  I had already replaced the plug, filter and cleaned ignition as well as setting the gap.  After disassembling the cover to inspect the ignition again I found no sign of any problems, loose ground etc...  Tried it again several times, adjusting the gap but never attained any spark.  At this point I am unable to get any spark.  Since it had not run yet with the new plug the plug is absolutely clean. I guess I am hoping to find a means of testing this prior to the runaround I expect when going for parts. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
On the right side of the engine there is a plate that the safety cable attaches to.  Bend this plate as close to the engine block as you can.  Try it again. Spark?  If yes you are set to mow but will need a safety cable soon.  If no spark pull back on the arm the cable moves and have a helper pull the rope.  Spark now?  If yes replace the cable. If no replace the coil.
