Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD L120 Fuse Blows, john deere l120, regulator rectifier

Question
QUESTION: My 2yo John Deere L120 starts and runs fine until I engage the mower, then the 20A fuse blows and has to be replaced to start the engine again. The spindles turn fine and the oil level is good (some indicate these as possibilities due to engine loading). Any ideas?

ANSWER: "Some" are wrong.  Your fuses could care less how bad your engine is running.  Is your mower less than 2 years old.  If so take to your dealer this is a warranty event.

You probably have a fried regulator/ rectifier.

QUESTION: When I asked the dealer what he thought it was he says the electric clutch is probably shorted ($250 to repair). Is this possible?

Answer
Unfortunately yes.  Not very common but it could be the problem.

Unplug your regulator.  it's the little box on the side of the motor.  Turn the deck on. If the fuse blows it's the clutch.  If the fuse doesn't blow it's the regulator.

Here is some advice that if you tell anyone where you got it, will force me to send Guido over to brake your thumbs!!

Look in your owners manual and call Deere.  Raise holy hell. I bought a Deere so this wouldn't happen, I shouldn't have to buy a 250.00 part this soon, yada, yada, yada.  You get the drift.  Be real nice, I mean make me puke, oh my goodness, I'm gonna vomit, nice.

Deere will buy the clutch and you will have to pay the labor.  You won't be able to install it yourself.
