Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 2 Volts to Starter, briggs and stratton, starter solenoid

Question
Good Morning John,

I have a B&S engine, model: 253707, type: 0157-01, code: 86012010.  Engine won't start.  I checked my battery (little less than 12 volts), I checked my solenoid (same reading as battery) however the starter is only receiving 2 volts.  Is that normal?

Thank you in advance for your response.

David

Answer
Hello David:

No this is Not the Proper Voltage. Check the Battery for a Weak/Dead Cell (Load Test). Check the Starter Solenoid and the Wires from the Battery to the Solenoid and from the Solenoid to the Starter. Check the Starter. Jumper from the Positive Post of the Battery to the Large Post of the Starter with a Jumper Cable Set. If the Starter Does Not Turn Properly, then Use a Different (Known to be Good) Battery and Check the Starter Again. If the Starter Still Does Not Turn Correctly, then the Starter is Bad. If the Starter Turns Properly, then the Battery in the Mower is Bad or the Wires to the Starter or the Solenoid are Bad. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select the File # 25. Then Select the Folder # 253700. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
