Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mtd lawn model series 660-679, transaxle, idler pulley

Question
Starts great- put in fwd, no moving and a belt is smoking, no reverse either.  Cannot push by hand in either direction.  It is stuck where it is.  If you jack it up one wheel goes one way and the other goes the opposite.  I had removed the deck and replaced a deck pulley but the belt that is smoking is way high up inside the mower somewhere. I could not find a place to lube the xmsn or the gear box in the back (whatever that is)  HELP!!!  Also, is there a place to buy a repair manual for this brand of mower.  Thankyou very much!

Answer
Hello Adrienne:

The Belt that is Smoking is the Motion Drive Belt. From your Description, it Sounds like the Transaxle has Frozen. This Usually Requires the Transaxle to be Removed and Disassembled, Cleaned and Lubricated. Remove the Belt from the Transaxle Pulley, then Try to Turn the Pulley by Hand. What Happens? If the Pulley will Turn, then the Idler Pulley is Frozen and Causing the Problem. If the Pulley Can Not be Turned by Hand, then the Problem is Inside the Transaxle. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Mower at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View. For a Transaxle Breakdown/IPL, Send me the Numbers Off the Transaxle OEM Plate and I can Locate a Breakdown for you to View Online. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
