Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): snapper mower replacement, wire casing, snapper mower

Question
QUESTION: I bought a new 14.5 hp B&S engine for my rear engine Snapper.  The Snapper is at least 15 years old, but the guy at the shop said this engine would work fine.  The engine info is Model # 280H07 Type 0005E1 Code 060103ZD

Here is where I'm at: the engine is on the mower, the gas line is hooked up, the belt is hooked up, the wire connected from the ignition button to the starter and the other wire in the starter wire casing (with a red lead) are hooked up.  There is the wire from my on/off switch at front of the mower that I can't figure where to hook it up, but the starter turns the engine without it.  There is also a wire that starts at the carb(?) that ends up at a female connector over by where the starter is.  I have no idea what to hook this up to...?  When I hit the start button the engine turns, it smells like it is getting gas, and I have tested and I am getting spark to the plug.  It started twice, coughed for a split second and then nothing.  One of the starts was with the pull cord.  The mechanism that turns the fly wheel when you pull the chord broke on my second effort at pull starting it.  I have tried the throttle at every possible setting from choke of slow.  I am stumped and feel like I am missing something really simple.  Thanks for any help.

ANSWER: Hello Jim:

No Worries. The Old Engine Didn't have the Carburetor Shut Off Solenoid. This Solenoid Needs to be Wired so the Solenoid has DC Current when the Engine is to Be Running and No DC Current when the Engine is Off. If this Solenoid Does Not have DC Current, the Engine will Not Run. The On and Off Switch has to be Wired to the Coil Shut Off Wire. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. You May have to Install a Seperate Switch for the Carburetor Solenoid. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: You rock!  The serial # is 63030830 and the model # is 28085S.

Answer
Hello Again Jim:

Thanks for the Good Words. Now, You are Going to have to Either Replace the Ignition Switch with a Regular Multi-Post Ignition Switch (the hardest way) or Add a Toggle Switch (the Easiest way) to Send Current to the Solenoid. The Switch on this Mower is a Single Wire Ground, Used to Ground the Coil/Magneto/Ignition Module and Stop the Engine. You can View a Breakdown/IPL at this Site Addy, http://wssemw.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF and Select, Shop Online Parts Look Up. Now Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Snapper) and Enter the Model Numbers 28085S. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now Select the Electrical Systems File. This is the File I Used for a Reference. If you Require Assistance in Wiring the Ignition Switch or the Toggle, Let me Know, Please. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.
