Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): kohler cv 22s, two inlets, valve plugs

Question
type number 75534

sears 22hp garden tractor. The fuel shutoff solenoid failed today. I find you can only buy the whole carb from sears, and it was running fine before it failed. I took the carb off, and the bowl/shut off valve assembly came off with 4 screws.

The 'inlet' that the shut off valve plugs is long, but next to it was another inlet that was plugged with a little rubber stopper. I hooked the gas line up and found that that inlet let gas in too( seemed to be more than the other) and was controlled by the float. So, I left the stopper off, and put it all together letting the solenoid seal the other one. I hooked it all back up just leaving that stopper out and it runs fine at low speed but is way way too rich at high and runs rough. like way too much fuel. There is no high speed adjust according to the mfgr.

I am thinking about removing the shut off solenoid pin that sticks into the inlet with a moto tool cut off blade. I mean, if the float shuts it off, why do you need it anyway?

THe question is, would too much gas coming into the bowl make it run like that? Oh, and why are there two inlets, one long, one short ( well, higher u and plugged)? and is there anyway to make it run without replacing the entire carb?

I wonder if it has nothing to at all to do with the shut-off, too.  Maybe there is something else the is causing it. If you have the air filter off it is still the same, and the choke is operating correctly. I also ( I guess just thinking fuel) pinched the gas line, and it does smooth out for a few seconds as it is running out of fuel. Am I doomed to pay 200+ for a carb just because the shut off failed?  COntacted kohler parts seller and they said kohler doesnt sell anything but the entire carb.

The fuel solenoid is used the prevent back fire and after run,and also shuts the fuel off so the carb does not flood when not running. The small rubber plug is for draining it in the winter. all the adjustments have been capped off due to the EPA guidelines.the carb is getting too much fuel from the pump when you are running it and has no way to control it other that the solenoid/float combination. Unfortunately they don't just sell the solenoid, you can buy some rebuild kits
