Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 420 front end, cotter pin, sectional index

Question
need follow up on this....where exactly should this big castle nut when I take the grill off? I'm not locating it.

Subject   John Deere 420 front end
Question   My front end is out of whack. The axle is shifted forward...putting the sheaves and belt out of whack. I jack it up, and it pops back into place, but as soon as any weight is put on, it snaps back out of whack. It seems like there should be a pin or bolt to hold it in place?

Answer   Yes there should. There is a 1" bolt that goes through the frame and I-beam.  Rarely do they break but I have seen it.

Usually they just need tightened.

Pull off the grill and you should see a big castle nut with a cotter pin in it.  Remove the cotter pin and tighten the bolt as tight as you can.

If you don't have a bolt and cotter pin showing the only thing holding your axle in is gravity. Buy a bolt. Go to the dealer. It's not an ordinary bolt

Answer
Hello Steve:

Did I Answer this Question the First Time? No Problem. The Pivot is Broken or the Needle Bearing is Worn Out that Allows the Front Axle to Rock on the Pivot. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower and Engine at this Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers . Then Select your Model from the Results Area. Then Select Sectional Index. Now Select Your Mower . Now Select the File you Need to View. Select the Wheels, Non-Powered Axles, Frame and Sheet Metal. Then Select Front Axle, Tei Rod and Drag Link. You can See the Pivot (#18). Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
