Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1999 murray lawn tractor wont turn over, murray lawn tractor, fly wheel

Question
QUESTION: OK i hope you can help this is weird. I shut down my mower the other week and now it wont restart. Its a 12.5 hp b&s. I knew my selinoid wqas bad so i replaced it, along with the coil, plug and battery. I gapped the coil properly, Have a good spark, and checked all wires with my ohm meter. found no reason for my mower to not turn over. checked compression and its strong. no gas in the oil or any oil leaks. when i crank it the motor spins but will not turn over. i dumped fuel down the carb and it just back fired. the motor does burn the fuel but wont continue to run. HELP! Please thanks. oh and if it helps the motor does sound like its spinning faster than before when i try to start it but the piston is moving so i ruled outr a bad rod and or crank

ANSWER: If you have spark, compression and fuel it should start.  Is there a fuel solenoid on the carburetor bowl?  Have you checked the flywheel key to see if it might be sheared?

Almost forgot, did you try another new plug?  I have seen brand new plugs not work.
What is the compression reading?
Let me know.
Eric

QUESTION: dont know about the fuel selinoid and where is the fly wheel key? would the motor still spin the crank if the key is sheared? as for the spark plug i pulled it out and tested it it works good no problem there. how would i check the fly wheel key? and what does a carb selinoid look like. thanks

Answer
If you have a solenoid you will see wire(s) connected to the carb.

The flywheel key is located under the flywheel nut and washer or starter cup.

Try replacing the spark plug first because those engines rarely shear keys.
Let me know what happens.
