Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 18hp Briggs & Stratton, briggs stratton, store electricity

Question
I start this up and sometimes for a while runs great. After cutting the lawn for
a while, it quits. Its about a 6 year old mower. I recently put a new plug in it
(was black), changed the oil, filter, new fuel lines, fuel filter. The dealer was
out of air filter so thats yet to be changed. I just pulled it off temporarily. I
pulled the carb bowl off, sprayed carb cleaner through the needle, sprayed
every port on the carb, but did not pull it completely. Put new gas in it.
Started it up, sounded great. about 2 days later, sitting in the same spot,
never moved, started it and it started a small pop'n sound and quit. Stupid ?,
could this be a battery problem? Its the original, so I know its do. But once its
started, does the motor still need the battery? I know a car does, but getting
different answers on a small engine. Or what else can I look for?

Answer
This engine does not need electricity to run but it does need a battery to complete the circuitry of the tractor.

Did that make sense. I hate to get a bad rating for clarity.

What I mean is the tractor has to have a battery to run but it will run with a dead battery. Huh?

All your battery really does is store electricity for the starter. Once the tractor is started it will produce it's own electricity. If your engine doesn't have a fuel shut off solenoid on the carob, it needs zero electricity to run.

If the plug was a fluffy black you still have a carb problem. Fluffy black=leaky carb. EVERY TIME.

You might have to pull off the carb and soak it.
