Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): old sears tiller, briggs stratton, model numbers

Question
we have a real old sears tiller with a pull start rope.  I've changed the spark plug, put gas in it.  We had it working a year ago, but can't get it started this season.  The gas I put in is fresh, with a 32:1 mixture.  The air filter looks clean.  I think it's a Briggs & Stratton 8 hp. Any suggestions for what a non-expert can do?

Answer
Hello Tom:

Remove the Air filter and Pour a Small Amount (Approx oz) of Gas Into the Carburetor. Try to Start the Engine. Does it Start and Quit? If Yes, then Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install a New Kit if Required. If No, then Remove the Plug and Wrap a Wire Around the Threads. Now Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine Block. Turn the Engine and Check the Spark Plug for Fire. If No Fire, then Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers Should be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
