Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 180 steering wheel removal, hounds of hell, steering wheel

Question
I am at wits end with trying to remove the steering wheel on my JD180. The bolt under the steering wheel has been removed. I had tried heat, penetrating oil & a gear puller to get this off. it has not budged. HELP

Answer
"The Hounds Of Hell" have possession of your steering wheel.
You can thank the dealer who originally assembled this tractor. He skipped the step in the manual that says " apply a thorough coating of Anti-Seize to the steering shaft before installing".
In my shop I drill a hole through the center of the wheel and then I take a bearing splitter and tighten it against the steering shaft below the wheel. With the hole drilled in the wheel center you can then use your puller and actually push against steel.
This doesn't always work and I have to get out the hacksaw and cut it off.
The good news is that a new steering wheel #AM121918 is reasonably priced at 34.75.
Sorry I don't have a secret answer.
Are you pulling the wheel because the steering has become extremely tight. If that is your problem it's not the steering shaft causing the problem. The problem is with the steering fan gear. It routinely seizes in its bushings. Compared to steering wheel removal it is easy.
