Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere stx 38 transmission, john deere stx 38, transmission types

I have a john deere stx 38 (yellow deck). the transmission casing broke and I'm looking in to getting another one used hopefully. My questions is how can I find out what all transmission types will fit my mower?

If you have the manual, and the model #spec number of the Mower not from the engine. You can research this information on the net by going to John Deere web site and entering the information about the mower. It may say john Deere on the mower but most are made by MTD. I have a Transmission list I will need more info to help you out.
