Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 14 hp Vanguard (single cylinder), air mixture, carburetor

Question
I have the above mentioned engine in a lawnmower.  Starts ok but will not idle as it used to.  It idles fast and then slow, engine rpm going up and then down, back and forth.  I have replaced air filter, fuel filter and spark plug.  I am down to fuel pump and carburator I think.  Any comments or personal experience on what I should do next?

Answer
Hello Dennis:

If the Low Compression is Not an Issue, then Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install a New Kit if Required. The Idle Jet is Restricted with Varnish that Gas Forms Over Time. If the Carburetor has Air Mixture Screws, then Sometimes you can Adjust the Air Mixture and Correct this Problem. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Hello Again Dennis:

I Just Read your Post. Thanks for the Good Words. Depending on the Carburetor. If the Carburetor has the Fuel Pump, then Use a Complete Kit. If the Carburetor is a Simple Bowl Type, then a Needle and Seat with a Bowl Seal Should be Good.  Remember, you Don't have to Remove the Welch Plugs to Clean the Carburetor. Hope this Helps.
