Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 14 HP Vanguard (single cylinder), fuel line, fuel pump

I have the above mentioned engine in a lawnmower.  Starts ok but will not idle as it used to.  It idles fast and then slow, engine rpm going up and then down, back and forth.  I have replaced air filter, fuel filter and spark plug.  I am down to fuel pump and carburator I think.  Any comments or personal experience on what I should do next?

Sounds like you have carb problems, dirt in the fuel line or in the bowl or in the carb itself. Take the Fuel line off the fuel pump that goes to the carb,put a rag under the line to catch the spillage. Turn the engine a few times, if fuel spurts out then the pump is good.If not you may need to rebuild the pump or get a new one depending what condition it is in.Thewn clean the carb while you have it apart.
