Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsmen mower wont stay running, regulator rectifier, jumper cables

Question
My mower has a kohler command motor(model CV460S, spec26509).It has a dead battery so I jump it off my truck. It starts and runs until you remove the jumper cables then it dies. I checked all the wires and connections. all connections are connected and corrosion free. Also how does one check the stator and the ignition module to see if they are still good?     Eric

Answer
The ignition module has nothing to do with charging the battery.
The charging system consists of a stator under the flywheel  and a regulator/rectifier. The stator makes AC the reg/rect changes it to DC for your battery. The stator is mounted somewhere on the fan shroud..It's the little metal box with 3 side by side wires going to it. The outer wires are from the stator. Set your meter on AC volts and test between the 2 wires you should have at least 30+ VAC. If not the stator is bad. If you have the volts set your meter on DC volts and test from the middle wire to ground. You should have at least 13 VDC. If you have the ac but not the dc replace the stator.
BUT FIRST!!!!!
physically remove, clean and reinstall all ground connections. The reg/rect must have an excellent ground to turn off and on as needed to charge your battery.

Print this out follow it step by step and there is no margin for error.

Easy troubleshoot.

To test the ignition module pull the fan shroud. Disconect the white wire from the module (coil).
Crank the motor, spark means good, no spark replace the module. Once again, cut and dry, no margin for error.
