Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): clutch operated cutting deck, craftsman lawn tractor, extension spring

Question
John, I have an older craftsman lawn tractor Model 917254551 serial 1658s04342. sometimes while cutting the mower blades stop working. If I let it set a little they will come back on when the switch is thrown. I checked the ground and its tight. could you please enlighten me. thank you sir

Answer
Hello Michael:

There are a Few Reasons. the Most Common are: 1- the Extension Spring is Bad. During Operation the Spring is Holding Tension on the Blade Idler Pulley. It is Also Vibrating from the Operation of the Mower. This Vibration Causes Heat and the Spring Weakens. Over Time the Spring will Weaken to the Point the Problem you are Having Will Occur. 2- Blade Belt Stretched. I have Seen a Blade Belt Slip and Not Smoke or Squeal. 3- The PTO Clutches are Heating Up and Releasing. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
