Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine will not start, amp meter, ammeter

Question
I am the owner of a craftsman LT2000 ride on lawnmower.  I purchased it new in oct 2004.  I went to start it the other day and no start. When i hit the clutch and turn the key the ammeter goes into the negative range and the starter does not spin.  Could it be that the battery needs replacing since it is the original battery when it was new

Sounds like the starter may be shorted out if the amp meter goes all the way. try to start the mower from the solenoid. If that turns the starter then the battery is bad if not you will need a new starter. When you do this use a good battery.
Thanks
