Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Tractor - Electrical: Battery or Alternator/Regulator?, hp engine, lt2000

Question
Hi, I have a 2003 Craftman lt2000 with a kohler 17 HP engine. The tractor is model # 917.273140 and the engine is Kohler # CV490 type # 27508. I'm having problems with starting the tractor. The battery is original. When I charged it recently the tractor started, I ran it for 10 minutes, turned it off and it wouldn't start again. I had this problem last year to a lesser degree. My question is how do I determine if the sealed 12v battery is no good or the alternator isn't charging it? I'd hate to spend $50 only to have the same problem.

Thanks,

Mike

Answer
Take your battery to your local parts store they will test it for free.
To test the charging system attach the red lead on a voltmeter to + cable, black lead to - cable. Start the tractor and check your meter. What you are looking for is a steady rise in voltage. It should eventually reach 13 vdc. It may take up to 3 minutes to peak. If it doesn't make it to 13 replace the stator (alternator)
