Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Brigss lawn mowers, gunk, lawn mowers

Question
I have two lawn mowers with briggs motors.  One is a 4 horse and one is a 6.25 horse.  The 6 will start then quit immediately only if primed numerous times; otherwise there is nothing.  The 4 horse starts hard.  When running, sometimes its good, other times the idle fluctuates drastically.  I have replaced the plug, gas and oil on both.  I have also pulled the flywheel andcleaned it and the solid state igniter and the magnet.  They were so rusty from sitting around and unused and from being in the weather.  IF you have any ideas it would be much appreciated.

Thanks much

Sincerely

Jeff

Answer
Hello Jeff:

From your Description I Suggest the Carburetors be Removed, Disassembled and Soaked Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air and Install New Kits. That should Remedy the Hard to Start Problem and the Starts and Quits Problem Also. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
