Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Start/Run Problem, internal passages, compression stroke

Question
Last year, I was given a unit to see if I could fix for a friend.  It is a Craftsman 5.5 Gold, B&S engine, 3-one convertible Craftsman II, Model 917.378579.  When he brought it to me it would not start.  It still won't.
I have put in fresh fuel, topped off the oil, constantly cleaned/gapped the plug, pulled down the coil and electrical and cleaned/gapped where necessary.
As for the carb, I have left it in place, but have determined that the needle valve/float are functioning freely. The bowl is clean and holds fuel.  Pull starting is impossible.  I shoot in carb spray into the carb, and it runs fine on the first pull, then stops.  I have added gas through the carb, and the same thing happens.  It will not draw fuel from the tank.  Hose line is free and clear.  Any thoughts??  Thank you in advance if you can help me get this repaired for him.  Regards,  CJ

Answer
Hello CJ:

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was Located in the Question Pool. Even though the Carburetor Bowl is Clean and Looks Good, the Internal Passages of the Carburetor are Restricted with Varnish Most Likely. Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install a New Kit if Required. If the Engine has Compression of More than 80psi and Fire to the Plug, then All that is Left is Gas and the Timing. The Flywheel Key Times the Firing of the Plug to the Position of the Piston in the Cylinder, During the Compression Stroke. The Magnets Passing the Coil Pickups then Make the Coil Fire the Plug. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
