Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B & S 4.5HP lawnmower wont start, briggs and stratton, cigarette box

Question
My mower has been idling real bad. RPMs up and down like crazy.

My Son tore the into the engine and removed the coil and wire connecting it to the engine.

Now, when I pull the cord, it feels real hard and stops immediately. It don't even act like it wants to start at all.

Did he miss a coil to flywheel clearance? He told me that he  let the coil connect to the flywheel magnets, then tightened the bolts.

Also, the other end of the wire that connects to the coil pack to the engine, is just looped around a small hole in a plastic thing?? Is this supposed to be like that?

The engine is model is: 10G902

Type: 0217B1

Code: 02104655

* As far as I can tell, there are no points on this mower. The only wires I see are the throttle cable and the wires on the coil pack.

Answer
Hello Charles:

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was in the Question Pool. 1-A Common Mistake by Beginners is the Coil to Flywheel Clearance. Set the Coil .020in from the Flywheel Magnets. a Cigarette Box Lanel will Do the Job. Set the Panel Between the Magnets and the Coil. Allow the Magnets to Pull the Coil to it and Tughten the Coil. Turn the Flywheel while Pulling the Box Panel from Between the Flywheel and Coil. 2- The Coil has a Ground and a Cut Off Wire. Usually the Ground Wire is Connected to the Engine Using One of the Coil Mounting Bolts. The Other Wire Goes to the Shut Off Switch. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select the File #10. Then Select the Folder #10G900. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
