Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter turning in reverse, jumper cable, starter shaft

Question
QUESTION: I have checked the polarity of my battery and it is correct....i have a new starter and solinoid on the mower...is there anything else that could cause the starter to turn in reverse? i have not changed any of the wireing so all showd be as in factory condition. this problem really has me baffled. i did try reversing the terminals on the battery. balck to pos and red to neg and it will turn the starter in the correct way but at a much slower speed and it seames to drain the batery when i do it. but again the only wires i have touched are the red from the bat to the solinoid when i changed it and the red to the starter at the same time. i have a mtd mower with a b&s motor. the model # for the mower is 13am67g062 62055
the serial# is 1l188c30090
the motor ser #is 207707
         type  1224e1
         code 981209zd
it is a B&S 14.5 hp
any help with this would be great! lol grass is getting high!

ANSWER:   Hello Dave:

I Purchased a New Starter that was Packaged Wrong from the OEM. It did the Same as the One you Have. Remove the Starter from the Engine and Place in a Vice. Connect a Jumper Cable Set to a Good Battery. Connect the Ground Lead of the Jumper Cable Set to the Vice or the Body of the Starter and then FIRMLY TOUCH the Large Post of the Starter with the Positive Lead of the Jumper Cable. If the Starter Turns Backwards, then Return the Starter. The Starter is Most likely a Reverse Rotation Starter. Usually a Starter will Not Engage the Flywheel if it Turns Reverse of the Rotation that the Starter Gear was Designed to Turn. The Gear Won't Move Up the Starter Shaft to Engage the Flywheel because of the Wrong Twist on the Starter Gear Shaft. It  May be Wired Wrong, A Recerse Starter as I Stated and was Boxed Wronf from the OEM. Changing the Solenoid and Replacing the Starter will Not Reverse the Polarity of the Mower. Check the Model Numbers you Sent me Please and then Go to this Addy http://www.buymtdonline.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BuyMTDOnline/index.jsp and Select the Use Our Detailed Parts Finder. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Is it Possible the Model Numbers are 13AM675G062? Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
