Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scott 1642 Kohler 16HP Backfire, sectional index, question pool

Question
Hello experts:

I have a Scott 1642 riding mower with Kohler 16HP engine that bacfires when making sharp turs 9maximum load). Runs fine otherwide. I thought lean misfire because fuel filer was running almost empty whereas it used to run 1/2 full. Alos had a problem with shutoff selonoid once. plug is black though. Replaced carb, plug, and filters. Now fuel filter is full but still backfires. thinking weak ignition at this point. Wondered about ignion components but not sure where to look. I have means of checking spark voltage, compression etc but not sure what is normal here. Any input is helpful. Thx in advance for your time. regards, Doug

Answer
Hello Doug:

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was in the Question Pool and I Just Saw it. From your Description it Sounds like you May have a Bare Wire that is Touching or Bumping Ground when you are Turning the Mower. It May be a Bad Seat Safety or One of the Other Safety Switches Causing this Also. By-Pass Each Safety One at a Time and Use the Mower. If the Problem Persist then, Reconnect the Safety Switch and By-Pass the Next One Until you have Check them All. It can Also be that the Carburetor Float is Set to High. Check the Float and Make Sure that when the Carburetor Float is Facing Up that the Float is Level with the Bowl Mating Surface. If Set to Low or To High you can Have the Problem you Described Also. Go to this Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Name Scotts. This should Bring Up the Model Listings for the Scotts Mower. Then Select your Model. Then Select Sectional Index. This should Allow you to View this Mower Online. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
