Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 16.5 Briggs I/C compression valve, compression release, automatic compression

Question
I'm told that this engine has an automatic compression relief valve that is stuck shut, making the engine darn near imposssable to start.  Just got the starter back from the rebuilder. He told me to check as this wont allow engine to turn over do to high compression.  Where is it, and How do I fix it?  Thanks

Answer
 Hello Steve:

Most Briggs Engines have the Compression Release on the Cam. If the Problem is the Compression Release Isn't Working, then Reset the Valves. The Easiest Way is the Set the Engine to TDC. Then Set the Intake Gap to .002in - .004in and the Exhaust to .009in - .011in. This is the Gap Between the Valve Stem and the Tappet/Rocker Arm. Send me the Model and Type Numbers, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Thanks.

 Good Luck
