Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere 170 garden tractor brakes, john deere 170, old john deere

Question
John,  I have an older (about 8 - 10 years old) john deere riding mower.  Everything is working fine on this tractor except for the brakes.  When you depress the brake pedal it goes all the way down and does not stop the tractor.  All the brake linkage is in good shape.  My question is:  Is there a brake adjustment for this john deere 170?  I believe there is an adjustment nut located
at the transaxle but I'm not sure.  If possible, could you explain the proper brake adjustment procedure?  I thank you for your time and knowledge.

Sincerely,
Tom

Answer
 Hello Tom:

There is a Brake Adjustment Nut on the Transaxle. Go to this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers 170. Then Select Your Lawn Tractor. Then Select Sectional Index. Then Select Power Train (170, 180). Then Look at the Breakdown Item #s, 10 thru 19. This is the Breakdown of the Brake Assy. Breakdown Item # 19 is the Brake Adjusting Nut. You May want to Inspect the Brake Pads (Breakdown Item # 10) as they May be Worn Out. If the Pads are Good, then With the Mower Off and the Transaxle in Neutral and the Brake Released; Tighten the Nut #19 Until Snug. **DO NOT  JAM** Now Reverse 1/4 Turn. Now Operate the Tractor and Micro Adjust if Required. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
