Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Pull start losing freewheeling rope ejecting, starter clutch, clutch tool

Question
Greetings, I have an old 5hp Briggs & Stratton rototiller that has started making a loud squealing noise and then starts to eject the starting rope. I'm willing to get dirty, but experience is usually automotive. Thanks for your time. John

Answer
The starter clutch is binding.  Removing the engine starter sheet metal housing will expose the starter clutch.  Remove the starter clutch with a Briggs starter clutch tool.  Use some sand paper and clean the shaft post.  Install a new starter clutch.
You may also have to replace the starter spring if the defective clutch caused damage to the spring or pulley.
Let me know if this helps.
