Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 422707 fuel pump, flapper valves, sears riding mower

Question
As far as I know I when I put the new pump kit in the pumpI did it the right way.I even put the cap on the large spring on the top and the bottom of the spring to make sure I was caorrecy. The B&S repair manual shows the large spring with the cap on under the spring.I assume the cap has the groove so that the spring seats into it to keep the spring in place.Looking from the outside of the pump I see this in the order.Plate, gasket, diaphram, pump body, springboss, diaphram spring, cap, valve spring, diaphram. It also shows another valve spring that I take it is the only one but one shows that spring from in front of the diaphram and then from the back of the diaphram. Is there only one valve spring? What are the boss,s it shows two in the manual.I think its where the valve spring seats on to. George Lee

-----Question-----
I have a Sears riding mower with a 422707 B&S twin engine.I only use it for snow plowing. It ran good last winter. The winter when I tried to start it it would only start if I poured gas or starting fluid in the carb. I have put a new filter on a new fuel pump repair kit on and cleaned the carb.I have also taken the fuel tank off and cleaned it out. Another thing I have done is put a clear fuel line on.All the connections are tight ,no leaks that I can see or hear. I even cut a 1/4 inch off of each end of the vacuum line to make sure there was no leaks. As I said above it starts only if I pour gas into the carb throat.Any help will be appreciated.I t ran great when I put it away last spring. It seems like the pump is not pumping as when I crank the engine I can see that gas is not being pumped into the carb. Battery is at full charge. Thanks. George Lee

Are the fuel pump springs in the correct locations?  Is one of the small fuel pump diaphragm flapper valves incorrect or maybe not sealing?

With the spark plugs removed you can check the fuel pump by removing top of the carb and cranking the engine.  You should only have to remove the top 3 carb screws to take off the top of the carb.
Let me know what you find.

Answer
What is the engine type number?  Most of those engine fuel pumps had 2 small springs and one large spring with the cap.  The cap does not have a groove in it...it just protects the thin diaphragm material from the thin spring.
Send me the type number.
