Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): carburetor problem, finger nail polish, float bowl

Question
Hi Eric,
The welch plug has dropped out of the carburetor on my snowblower. Its a tecumseh engine. I was having starting problems and removed the float bowl to check for water. The welch plug was inside. How do I replace the plug and can I do it without removing the carburetor? Do I need a new plug or can I reuse the old one?

Jim

Answer
You will have to remove the carb to replace the plug.  Most likely you will need a new one.  Welch plugs are convexed when new.  Install it with the bulge facing up, then use a large, flat punch and a hammer to flatten the plug so it stays in place.  Welch plugs are included in carb kits but you maybe able to purchase them seperately.  Once installed, you can use some clear finger nail polish as a sealer...just make sure to let it dry over night before adding fuel.

Let me know if this helps.
