Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): brigg 12hp that wont start, blown head gasket, bolt torque

Question
I have a Briggs&Stratton model 286707 type 041301 code 91061011 that won't start? It has spark but that's all. I sprayed starting fluid into the carb but nothing not even a sign that it want's to start. I can rotate the engine by hand, that I believe is telling me that I have no compression. My question is do you think that it's a blown head gasket or could it be more that that like a piston or a connecting rod. It spins like crazy with the battery but with no resistance and no strange noise........thanks for the help........

Answer
Do you have a compression tester?  If so, check the compression.  You should get some type of a reading.  If you don't have a compressoin tester, ask a friend or co-worker.  Many DIY mechanics have compression gauges.

Your einge is old...1991 based on the code number.  It is possible the head gasekt is blow, valves need adjusting or the piston or rod is damaged.

You can check to see if the piston is moving up and down.  Remove the spark plug and use a WD-40 plastic straw inserted into the spark plug hole.  Hold the straw in one hand to feel if the piston moves while you rotate the engine with the other hand.  You may have to guide the straw slightly opposite the muffler/carburetor to feel the pistion.  The reason for this is due to the fact that the spark plug hole does not set directly above the piston.
Have you checked the head bolt torque?
Let me know what you find.
