Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 16 Hp - Rebuilding with short block, scribed lines, would like your opinion

Question
Hello Tim,
This my first attempt in trying to rebuild a blown engine. I have several issues and would like your opinion.

Blew the engine on my JD 116 tractor. Its a model 402707, built in 1983. Found a 422707 short block that looks identical except for some minor parts, but the governor support (Its part of the cast aluminum housing) inside the  block was busted off. Was able to secure the support back in the housing with titanium glue, a two part epoxy with titanium used in metal working as a filler prior to machining on worn parts. Its very secure.

At this point in time I do not have a service/repair manual for the tractor but am going to get one.

But for me to repair the governor support, I had to remove the camshaft, crankshaft, piston, etc.

My first concern is in assembly of these components. The gear on the crankshaft has a dimple on the gear plus four scribe marks 90 deg from each other. The gear on the camshaft just has a dimple. Its easy for me to line the dimples up to each other but not sure what the scibed lines mean. I've also read that in some cases the dimples should be lined up one gear off. Not sure if this is the case.

I have not been able to find a manual on this engine anywhere or if it would have that kind of information.

I probably will have more questions in the future if you would be willing to work thru this with me.

Happy Holidays.

Answer
Hello Wally,
From my understanding the scribed lines are used in the manufacturing process as a reference point while balancing the gear.  As long as you line up the dots you should be fine.  You can find a repair manual here:

I always suggest getting the factory repair manual as they are more detailed than the aftermarket equivilant.

Have A Happy Holiday!
