Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro s140, gallon containers, auto parts stores

Question
Hi, I have a older 1980 Toro S-140 snow thrower.  It has good spark, and seems to have good compression.  It will not start. If I spray starting fluid in carb, it fires for a short time.  I took the carb off and cleaned it, but still the same problem.  Could a passage under the welch plug be cloged?? I did not remove that yet. what do you think I should check next. Thanks Bob

Answer
It's possible there is something clogged under the welch plug.  However, the plug is difficult to remove...we rarely remove them.

There is a check valve in some of the carb.  I don't know what models used the valve but when I see the carb I can tell if it has the valve.  When you shake the carb you should hear it rattle.

Did you try soaking the carb in some commerical cleaner?  You can purchase one gallon containers of the carb cleaner at most auto parts stores.  This stuff is usually very strong.  Soaking will destroy/eat all plastic parts so you have to remove them.  Soak the carb per the directions on the container, rinse with parts solvent and then blow out all the orfices with compressed air from an air compressor.

You may have to soak the carb a couple of times.  I'm guessing the stuck check valve is you problem.
Let me know if this helps.
