Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): snow blower, adjustment screw, snow blower

Question
have a snow blower idles really high. i found the adjustment screw on the carb and slowed it down. Now it wants to stall when throwing the snow. I looked at the governor and the arm doesn't move. the only time it moves is when the engine stops. not sure what to do. i can move the arm manually it moves freely and the engine revs up like it should under load. does this mean something wrong with the goveror
any ideas

Answer
Sounds like you need to perform a static governor adjustment and could possibly need a carburetor clean out or overhaul.  To perform the static adjustment loosen the clamp on the governor arm where it attaches to the shaft that comes out of the engine block.  Note the direction that it moves when it moves the throttle wide open.  Hold the arm in the wide open position and rotate the shaft the same direction until it stops.  Then re-tighten the clamp.  As for the clean out of the carburetor it is a matter of taking it all apart and cleaning out all of the jets and passage ways.  If you are not familiar with carburetors I would recommend purchasing a repair manual that will give you step by step instructions.
