-----Question-----
I am trying to help a friend get his Briggs and Stratton engine to start.  Putting starting fluid in the cylinder does not get the engine running.  The spark seems weak to me.  We put a new plug in, replaced the gas line which was leaking and checked the flywheel to insure the key was intact and properly aligned.  There are no points on this engine and I am at a loss as to what causes the spark to be generated.  Occasionally when trying to start the engine a weak pop can come from the exhaust.  Do I have a faulty magneto?
-----Answer-----
your unit  if it has no  points, should state on it somewhere solid state. althought at times this is painted over or it just  disappears. so with out numbers off your engine i have no idea what you have.   but >>>>  your spark  should be a strong blue ark.  there is a chance it is weak.  thus> needs replacment of magnetto. which  is solid state> and perduses your spark to plug as magnets on flywheel  pass under it.   if its a point system.>>  they are under the flywheel which must be removed to get to  or see.   Alos  may  i make note, the poping sound you are hearing?  this could be a valve which is not seating, it could also be if someone took engine apart and did not aline up cam . gear  with crankshaft> it is off time...  it will not start!!!!   putting starting fluid into cyclinder?   thats  not a good idea.  you spray it into  carburator. if your carburator on other hand is dirty,  and not permitting fuel to engine?   thats another story.   So with all of this,  i,d say  back tract and check all odds.   hope this imformation  gives you so help.
The number on the Briggs and Stratton engine is 134402.  The engine has not been apart and I have looked under the flywheel and there are no points.  Sounds like a failed magneto.

Answer
your correct........   replace it  and you should be fine.
follow  the way it comes off. 2 small bolts. when you put new one back on,   bolt it on but do not tighten.   place a small  pc.  of 220  sandpaper between it and flywheel, move mag tight against it and tighten  it up.  remove paper and  it will be set.  we use gages,   but follow this snad paper trick  and you will be very close.
