Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh 5 HP - Lack of power/wont run w/o full choke, hello bill, exhaust port

Question
Is it likely the carb is dirty and needs rebuild if I have a lack of power and it simply dies if I try to reduce the choke? This is on an Ariens 5HP snowblower.

Thanks!

Bill

Answer
 Hello Bill:

If the Engine is Running with the Choke On and Not with it Off, then 1st Turn the Engine in Reverse Rotation. If the Engine KICKS BACK then the Compression is Supposed to be Good. If there is KICK BACK then Remove and Disassemble the Carburetor and Soak it Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner. Then Blow out the Passages with Compressed Air and Install New Kit. Remove the Muffler and Ensure the Exhaust Port is Clean and the Muffler isnt Clogged. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Thanks.

 Good Luck
