Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman snowblower, craftsman snowblower, sewing needle

Question
I bought an old, very used craftsman 5hp/22" snowblower Model #536.918200 It only runs with the choke on full or almost on full even after 10 minutes. It doesn't run fast enough to throw the snow out of the chute more than 2 ft. and then clogs up and oozes snow out like a pasta machine or it dies. I know it's history and am sure the carb. has been adjusted/misadjusted. I have fresh gas and a new plug. How should I adjust or chek the adjustment of the carb? It's old so it has a screw in the bottom of the float bowl(mixture adj. screw?)and one one the side (idle adj. screw?)I tried to open the screw on the bottom of the float bowl to ween it off of the choke. It worked a little but turning it more made it sputter and puff a bit of sooty smoke so I put it back. I made sure the throtle linkage is opening all the way but still have too low RPMs. How do I set up the carb properly as a starting point? Thanks Much!

Answer
a starting point is....... turn all the way in.  do not run in too tight. back  both out  1 and 1/4 idle  and bowl  or mixture needle set> 1 and 1/2 turns out.   i,d also try this......   remove the fuel bowl,  check for dirt. and the needle and bowl nut???  remove needle set,  in the bowl nut there should be a hole thru it from side to side. make sure its cleared out.   also  check for a very  VERY  small hole which is close to threads on side that runs on an angle to inside ...  make sure its clear (it is so small  a wire brush strand will do to clear it,  or a small sewing needle..   that will make a difference.  try these things.       follow up... reading again,  a 5 h.p. on a 22 inch   single stage blower????  its not going to move a very large amount of snow too fast.
kelly   how have you made out with this????  JD
