Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton 5 HP model 130202, homelite chainsaw, briggs stratton

Question
Hi Eric,
thanks for your time. I actually have a 2 questions, hope you don't mind. First, I have a B&S 5HP stationary engine Model 130202, type 164001 and it doesn't start. It starts if I pour a bit of petrol down the carburetor or strait in the cylinder, but it doesn't keep running. It has a new spark plug and a fresh petrol, and carburetor and suction tubes seem clean. Any ideas on most likely cause would be greatly appreciated.
My second problem is my Homelite Chainsaw 38cc,model i3850b, other info on the data plate is family XH2XS.0384RA and PS-01530 and UT 10869. The chainsaw starts when cold, idles but doesn't brew up and it will stall as soon as it is tilted sideways. It won't start when it is hot either.
Thank you once again for your time, and any info is greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Elvis.

Answer
How old is the Briggs engine?  Did you replace the fuel pump diaphragm?

For the saw, how old is it.  Carb, dirty muffler spark arrestor or clogged exhaust port can cause the problem.  If the spark arrestor, muffler or exhaust port have never been cleaned then I would start there.  Have you checked the compression?

Let me know.
Eric
