Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan saw wont keep running, diafram, hand pumps

Question
Hello, I have a Poulan 'Wildthing' chainsaw, when I start it up it runs for 5-10 seconds until I try to rev it up, then it dies out like it it running out of fuel. The spark arrestor is clean, the fuel mix is fresh, the air filter is clean, the plug + spark is good. I now suspect the diafram in the carb might be  bad, is there any way to test this? The way it acts, is like it starts + runs for a few seconds on the fuel the primer bulb pumps into the carb. Thanks

Answer
You pressure test the "pop off pressure" of the diaphragm with some special hand pumps.  I really don't use these tools much any more since carb kits are so cheap and you can usually tell right away if the carb needs to be rebuilt.

Have you tried turning out the mixture needles to richen  the fuel/air mix.  Try about 1/8 to 1/4 maximum of a turn out.  If the saw still refuse to run the most likely the diaphragms need to be replaced.  Most shops can sell you a kit if you take the carburetor in with you.  Pay attention to how the gaskets/diapragms are installed and the inlet needle arm height.  Just take you time dis-assembing the carb and you should be fine.
Let me know if this helps.
